Vitiligo Patients, Take Note: 3 Signs That May Indicate Changes in Your Immune Function!

Vitiligo Patients, Take Note: 3 Signs That May Indicate Changes in Your Immune Function!

The core issue in vitiligo is immune system dysfunction, and changes in immune status can also affect the stability of white patches. In many cases, when the body's immune status changes, it may send certain signals. Today, I will explain these three signs to help you recognize them in time and make adjustments early.
vitiligo patients
1. Recurrent Colds and Frequent Infections
If you notice that you catch colds more easily than before, take longer to recover from each cold, or frequently experience mouth ulcers, gum inflammation, or slow wound healing, this may indicate changes in your body's immune defense.
The immune system needs not only to effectively defend against external pathogens but also to maintain immune regulation of the body's own tissues. When immune regulation becomes abnormal, it may also affect the normal function of melanocytes.
If new white patches appear or existing patches expand at the same time, it is especially important to pay attention to changes in your condition.
2. Persistent Fatigue and Low Energy
Even after getting enough sleep, you may still feel exhausted, lack motivation to do anything, have difficulty concentrating, and experience low moods more easily.
This persistent fatigue may be associated with long-term stress, insufficient sleep, and changes in the body's neuroendocrine and immune regulation. Prolonged stress may affect cortisol levels and, in turn, influence the normal function of immune cells, creating a cycle in which these factors affect one another.
Some patients report that the borders of their white patches become less distinct during periods of extreme fatigue or high stress. Therefore, it is important to pay closer attention to your overall condition and any changes in your white patches.
3. A Noticeable Decline in Sleep Quality
Difficulty falling asleep, frequent dreams and waking during the night, or waking up too early in the morning and being unable to fall asleep again may all affect the body's normal immune regulation.
Nighttime is an important period for physiological recovery and immune regulation. Persistently poor sleep quality may affect the normal functioning of the immune system.
If you have been sleeping poorly for a prolonged period, not only may your mental state deteriorate, but your overall physical condition may also be affected. The stability of your white patches is equally worth monitoring.
For patients currently receiving treatment, if you experience any of these signs, it is especially important to communicate with your doctor promptly.
Your doctor may adjust your treatment plan based on your immune status, vitiligo activity, and treatment response. For example, if immune dysfunction or poor overall health is identified, your doctor may assess whether certain irritating treatments should be temporarily postponed to avoid placing additional strain on your body.
The philosophy of treating both the root causes and the symptoms, from the inside out, emphasizes that while treating the skin, we must also pay attention to the immune system as a fundamental factor.
True recovery requires comprehensive treatment that addresses both the root causes and the symptoms, from the inside out.

Understanding Vitiligo: Signs, Types, and What to Expect

Vitiligo is a condition that affects the color of the skin, causing noticeable changes that can impact both appearance and confidence. Understanding its signs and patterns is the first step toward managing it effectively.

Common Signs of Vitiligo

Vitiligo typically begins with subtle changes that may gradually become more visible over time. The most common signs include:

  • Patchy loss of skin color, often first appearing on the hands, face, and areas around body openings or the genitals
  • Premature whitening or graying of hair, including the scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows, or beard
  • Loss of color in mucous membranes, such as the inside of the mouth and nose

Although vitiligo can develop at any age, it most commonly appears before the age of 30.

Different Types of Vitiligo

Vitiligo does not look the same for everyone. Depending on the type, it can affect the body in different ways:

  • Universal Vitiligo
A rare form where discoloration affects nearly all areas of the skin.
  • Generalized Vitiligo
The most common type. White patches appear on multiple parts of the body, often in a symmetrical pattern.
  • Segmental Vitiligo
Usually affects one side or one area of the body. It often starts at a younger age, progresses for a limited time (1–2 years), and then stabilizes.
  • Localized (Focal) Vitiligo
Limited to one or a few small areas of the body.
  • Acrofacial Vitiligo
Primarily affects the face, hands, and areas around body openings such as the eyes, nose, and ears.

How Vitiligo Progresses

One of the most challenging aspects of vitiligo is its unpredictability. The course of the condition varies from person to person:

  • In some cases, white patches stop developing without treatment
  • More commonly, pigment loss gradually spreads, sometimes affecting large areas of the body
  • Occasionally, natural skin color may partially return

Final Thoughts

Vitiligo is not a one-size-fits-all condition. Its signs, types, and progression can differ widely between individuals. While it may feel uncertain, understanding how vitiligo behaves can help you make informed decisions about care and treatment.

If you notice early signs, seeking professional guidance can make a meaningful difference in managing the condition and maintaining healthy skin.

Be Wary of the 4 “Culprits” of the Spreading of White Patches

Be Wary of the 4 “Culprits” of the Spreading of White Patches:

During the treatment of vitiligo, many patients face the problem of white patches spreading more and more. In order to help everyone better understand some causes and preventive measures for the spreading of vitiligo, this article will introduce four "culprits" that may cause the spreading of white patches.
1. Improper Medicine & Treatment Selection:
Patients should exercise caution when selecting medications to treat vitiligo. While there are many medications on the market for treating vitiligo, including topical and oral medications, not every medication is suitable for every patient's condition.

Hormone drugs, in particular, can have serious side effects if used improperly or abused. Therefore, patients need to consult their doctors and follow professional recommendations for medcines selection and treatment use.
2. Improper Diet:
The diet also has a certain impact on vitiligo patients. Excessive intake of certain foods may worsen the condition, such as alcoholic & artificial colored beverages, too much spicy and simulating food, and the food that causes allergy for you (everyone is different). Therefore, patients with vitiligo should adjust their eating habits and avoid eating too much food that may aggravate their condition, but according to the recent study, there is no strict food taboo for you.
It has also been found in clinical practice that picky eating, and partiality for a particular kind of food may also induce vitiligo. Although trace elements are present in very small amounts in the human body, they are indispensable. Only when having a balanced diet with trace elements and nutrients properly supplemented, can our immunity remain stable.

At the same time, increasing the intake of foods that are beneficial to treatment, such as fresh fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C (According to the recent study and base on many clinical experience, moderate taking of vitamin C can actually be beneficial for the condition, is it outdated that patient with vitiligo need to avoide Vitamin C), copper, etc., can help improve the body's recovery and resistance.

3. Large Mood Swings and Irregular Lifestyle.
In the rapidly developing modern society, the pace of life is accelerating, and people's emotions are easily affected by various factors, which may lead to the occurrence of vitiligo. According to statistics, about 20% of vitiligo patients will experience high levels of mental stress such as anxiety, depression, and physical and mental exhaustion before diagnosis.
The impact of vitiligo on a patient's appearance often results in psychological discomfort and stress. Being in negative emotions for a long time may cause endocrine disorders and aggravate the symptoms of vitiligo.
Therefore, patients should seek psychological support or counseling, communicate with professionals and others, and learn ways to actively cope with stress to help with emotional stability and physical and mental health.
Although stress in life is unavoidable, we can resolve negative emotions and divert our attention in reasonable ways. For example, develop hobbies, strengthen physical exercise (also good for the condition physically), and actively participate in social activities.
Besides the stress, also need to adjust your daily routine. Avoid staying up late or being overtired. Long-term lack of sleep can lead to endocrine disorders and immune dysfunction, which in turn affects the stability of the condition.
4. Skin Damage & Trauma
The skin of people with vitiligo is easily affected by trauma when the condition is not in the fully stable stage. When trauma or damage occurs to the skin, it may cause an isomorphic response or Koebner phenomenon, causing new white spots to appear around the wound.
Vitiligo may also caused by skin burns, sunburn, chilblains, etc. In addition, vitiligo may also be caused by friction and pressure on the skin if the condition is unstable. Therefore, whether we are engaging in outdoor sports or engaging in work that may damage the skin, we should protect our skin, avoid exposure to strong sunlight and chemicals especially those containing benzene or phenolic substances, and choose mild skin care products and suitable skin care equipment when using them.
In addition, trauma can also cause damage to the immune function of T lymphocytes, thereby reducing immunity. Hence, patients with vitiligo should pay attention to skin protection and avoid trauma and injuries.
Taken together, vitiligo is a comprehensive disease, and treatment needs to be considered holistically. (1) Medication & treatment selection, (2)dietary modifications, (3) mood and lifestyle management, and (4) skin protection are all important aspects.

Wjhat Are Factors/Causes of Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a common acquired pattern or generalized skin pigmentation disease. Due to the disappearance of skin melanocyte function, but the mechanism is unclear. All parts of the body can occur, common in the back, wrist, forearm, face, neck and genitalia around. Female genitals can also occur, mostly young women.
Wjhat Are Factors/Causes of Vitiligo

First,Autoimmune
1, vitiligo patients with other autoimmune diseases and other autoimmune diseases in patients with vitiligo than the average person was significantly higher.
2, the patient can be detected in a variety of serum autoantibodies, and anti-melanocyte antibodies, the positive rate of 50-93%, and with the severity of the disease.
3, malignant melanoma patients with vitiligo was significantly higher than normal, a group of 450 patients with melanoma abroad, 29 cases (6.4%) with vitiligo.
4, vitiligo patients with cellular immunity and humoral immune abnormalities, such as changes in T cell subsets, soluble interleukin-2 receptor and some changes in cytokines.
5, vitiligo disease persistent chronic, in line with the general laws of autoimmune disease.
6, vitiligo not only affect the skin melanocytes, but also affect the eye, ear and other pigment cells.
7, some patients with the same shape positive.
8, the pathological changes in the white spot on the edge of the mononuclear cell aggregation, in line with late-type hypersensitivity, white margin of the epidermis Langerhard cells increased.
9, corticosteroids and immunosuppressive agents effective.
Second, Melanocytes Own Damage
In the process of synthesis of melanin, the intermediate products such as dopa dopaquinone dopa pigment 5-6 dihydroxy indole and so on, are belong to the monophenol or polyphenolic compounds, the accumulation of phenols or produced Many of the melanocytes have selective cytotoxicity, can damage melanocytes.
Third, The Neurochemical Factors
Nerve endings release of chemical media such as norepinephrine, acetylcholine or other substances may have a damaging effect on melanocytes.
Fourth, Genetic Factors
Genetic factors and the incidence of the disease plays a certain relationship, according to reports at home and abroad 3-40% of patients with positive family history.
Five ,Other Causes
1, some drugs: such as anti-cholinesterase drugs, light-sensitive drugs, sulfur-based drugs, thyroxine, norepinephrine, vitamin A acid drugs, vitamin C,
2, mental factors, sun, trauma, surgery, friction, etc .;
3, wine and seafood;
4, after a variety of infectious diseases.
Six, Comprehensive Reasons

Vitiligo is a result of melanoma cells due to significant reduction or loss caused by skin, mucous membranes and hair pigmentation disease. Vitiligo pathogenesis is more complex, including autoimmune theory, melanoma cell destruction theory, neurochemical factors, genetic factors, trace elements and mental factors, microcirculation, diet, mood, alcohol and tobacco, drug stimulation, mechanical stimulation , Surgery, trauma, and so on a variety of incentives can cause the incidence of vitiligo, it is recommended to check clearly, and then symptomatic treatment, in order to achieve the desired therapeutic effect.

How to treat vitiligo with Chinese Medicine

Vitiligo (vit-ill-EYE-go) is a pigmentation disorder in which melanocytes (the cells that make pigment) in the skin, the mucous membranes (tissues that line the inside of the mouth and nose and genital and rectal areas), and the retina (inner layer of the eyeball) are destroyed. As a result, white patches of skin appear on different parts of the body. The hair that grows in areas affected by vitiligo usually turns white.
Most people with vitiligo lose pigment in patches of normally pigmented skin, which is replaced by flat, white patches with irregular borders. This loss of pigmentation can occur in small patches on one side of the body or in large areas covering over 50 percent of the body. These patches are usually areas of your body that are exposed to the sun, such as your:
hands
face
arms
feet
How to treat vitiligo in China?
Combined therapy of Chinese and Western medicine is based on the balance of yin and yang inside of vitiligo patient body, and the disorganized degree of their immune system to cooperate rationally with Chinese Medicine and Western therapy. External medicine can change skin environment, improve melanocyte to proliferate, differentiation, and help skin darker faster. Internal medicine are used to improve body internal environment, balance yin and yang, dredging the channel, and balance immune, through in and out these two treatments to inflect patient at the same time.

Chinese medicine treat vitiligo: through promoting blood circulation to remove blood stasis, improving microcirculation, increasing blood and oxygen supply at vitiligo affected part, promoting body to make tyrosine, inhibiting melanin damaged, preventing vitiligo continue spread, by increasing chi and energizing to reach the goal that melanophore growing and activate rest broken melanophore; through tonifying kidney plus modulate, relieves depression and tranquilization, reach whole the balance of yin and yang, immunity overall coordination, to precaution vitiligo relapse after recovery.

My Son Suffering with Vitiligo 3years How to treat?

Q: My son who 10.5 years old and is suffering with Vitiligo 3years already. Doctor pesrcribed him Omnacortil Tab 5mg, three table , twice a week. I used 3 months ,but now have not any effect, how can i cure my son with vitiligo ?Laser and Cream that i had used ,but not effect ,please help me

A: Vitiligo is complex skin condition
Vitiligo is restricted to the loss of skin color and does not affect the patient in any other way, however the psychosocial impact of it is tremendous and hence treatment is sought. Treating vitiligo is not an easy task and the treatment may not be always effective. However, with proper treatment repigmentation of the lesions can be achieved.

We treat vitiligo with Chinese medicine depending on the extent of the vitiligo, how widespread it is and how fast is it progressing. After seeing these parameters, we decide whether to give the best treatment.such as :UM-D , Chinese Medicine ,Chinese Bath ,acupuncture,Grafting and etc.

Can laser be used to treat lip vitiligo?

Q: My Daughter is diagnosed with Lip, Tip have Vitiligo,  She had a small white patch near her nose which the doc successfully treated with Excimer laser, Hence would like to know Whether Excimer laser could be used to cure my daughters' vitiligo. Now didn't have effect, any help?

Answer :Excimer Laser is a option for treatment of vitiligo. Even lip vitiligo responds well to excimer laser. However, lips by their very nature are little bit resistant to any kind of vitiligo treatment than the nose/other parts of the face. So it may take a longer time to get colour. But Excimer Laser is definitely a better choice than PUVA.
So we need to treat vitiligo ,stop vitiligo spread at first. the best treatment vitiligo is chinese medicine and UM-D Treat ment.

Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment of Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a skin condition, where there is progressive depigmentation of the skin. Often shrouded by myths and misconceptions, read on to know in detail about its causes, symptoms, and treatment.
Vitiligo , also termed as Leucoderma, is a common skin disorder affecting a percent or more of the world's population. It is a distressing skin disease wherein the sufferer develops white patches on face, hands, legs, and other areas of the body due to gradual loss of the pigment melanin from the skin layers. The condition can be embarrassing, especially in people who have dark skin, as these white patches look extremely ugly.
Causes of vitiligo
The actual cause of this condition is still unknown, but surely, beliefs like eating unhealthy or wrong food combination like fish and milk, pumpkin and milk, onion and milk, or any citrus or acid foods after milk are not the reasons. This problem mainly occurs when the skin stops producing melanin, a skin pigment that protects the skin from harsh sun radiations. As a result, the skin areas that are deprived of this pigment start appearing white. However some of the probable causes include:

  • Skin trauma
  • Sunburn
  • Excessive thinking or mental stress
  • Heredity
  • Chronic gastric disorders
  • Burn injuries
  • Jaundice
  • Presence of parasites in the alimentary canal
  • Defective perspiratory mechanism
  • Other illnesses like diabetes, hyperthyroidism and Addison's disease

Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment of Vitiligo

Symptoms
There are not many symptoms, as the most common and obvious symptom is the appearance of white patches on the skin. These white patches on the skin mostly start showing on the extremities first, with the patches eventually increasing in size and severity. There is often loss of hair in these patches, due to which, if this condition is seen on the scalp, then there are irregular bald patches seen in conjunction with the loss of pigmentation. Depigmentation is also commonly seen around body orifices, like the mouth, eyes, nostrils, etc. Normally, the visible features suffice to reach a diagnosis, but to reach a final diagnosis, it is always better to examine the skin under a special kind of light with the help of a diagnostic tool known as Wood's lamp.
Some others Symptoms of vitiligo are given below:

  • Alopecia or loss of hair
  • Premature graying of hair
  • Along with skin, the hair growing on the affected skin also turns white
  • Sensitivity towards cold
  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Skin irritation when exposed to sun's rays or chemicals

Treatment for vitiligo
There are various methods of treating vitiligo such as UM-D, phototherapy, skin grafting (especially at the early stages), psoralen photochemotherapy (PUVA), Chinese medicine , immunomodulator creams used with narrowband UVB treatment and laser treatment.

UM-D Treatment holds that control the spread of vitiligo as it first step not the restore of color, because we need to cure the causes of vitiligo not only the symptoms, not like some external use medicines irritate the skin and force it change the color, later it will relapsed again. But our the UM-D treatment take this into consideration, the second the step is restore the color, the third steps is the consolidation treatment, it will decrease the relapse rate of vitiligo.vitiligo is a curable disease, but it need the confidence and patience of vitiligo patient.

Avoid Diet for Vitiligo Treatment

The reason of vitiligo is the melanophores’ ability of synthesizing melanin decrease or disorder.
Therefore, all the factors which may affect the metabolism of melanin should be avoided.
Avoid Diet for Vitiligo Treatment

Vitamin C, which with greatest influence, can prevent dopaquinone to synthesize melanin. In the same time, it allowe the synthesized dopaquinone return to dopa, stopping the biosynthesis of melanin.
On the other hand, vitamin C will affect the intestinal absorption of copper ions, which can also reduce the copper oxidase activity in blood serum, affecting the tyrosinase activity. Therefore, patients with vitiligo should eat little or not eat vitamin C. For foods with rich vitamin C, they shouldn’t to eat or eat less, such as fresh orange, grapefruit, fresh date, hawthorn, cherry, kiwi, strawberry, bayberry, tomato and green pepper.

The over acid or spicy foods shouldn’t be ate.

Patients should eat foods which are rich with tyrosinase and minerals, such as lean meat, eggs, organ meats (liver, kidney, etc.), milk, fresh vegetables, beans and their products, peanuts, black sesame seeds and walnuts and other nuts, as well as some other black foods such as black rice, black beans, oysters, snails, clams, razor clam.

But you should know the diets can only improve the condition, not a permanent treatment for the patients.

Causes of vitiligo

Surprisingly, the causes of vitiligo are yet to be precisely established, but most of the research so far points to the following:
An autoimmune disorder - the patient's immune system becomes overactive and destroys the melanocytes2
Genetic oxidative stress imbalance
A stressful event
Harm to the skin due to a critical sunburn or cut
Exposure to some chemicals
A neural cause
Heredity - family link
A viral cause.
Vitiligo is not transmittable; in other words, it is not contagious, people cannot catch it from each other.
Less than 1% of the population are affected by the appearance of vitiligo in their skin.3 It has no age, sex or ethnic discrimination, but studies have concluded that a larger percentage of cases seem to start around the age of 20.

Vitiligo signs and symptoms vary considerably from person to person. It is more pronounced in people with dark or tanned skin. Some may only acquire a handful of white dots that develop no further while others develop larger white patches that join together affecting larger areas of the skin.

Who gets and causes of vitiligo

Who gets and causes
Millions of people worldwide have vitiligo. Nearly half get it before they reach 21 years of age. Most will have vitiligo for the rest of their lives. It is very rare for vitiligo to disappear.
Vitiligo occurs about equally in people of all skin colors and races. About half the people who get vitiligo are male and half are female.
The risk of getting vitiligo increases if a person has:
A close blood relative who has vitiligo.
An autoimmune disease, especially Hashimoto’s disease (a thyroid disease) or alopecia areata (causes hair loss).
What causes vitiligo?
Vitiligo develops when cells called melanocytes (meh-lan-o-sites) die. These cells give our skin and hair color.
Scientists do not completely understand why these cells die. One type of vitiligo, non-segmental vitiligo, may be an autoimmune disease. An autoimmune disease develops when the body mistakes a part of itself as foreign. If the body mistakes these cells as foreigners, it will attack and kill these cells.

Studies suggest that the other type of vitiligo, segmental vitiligo, has a different cause. This type seems to develop when something in the body’s nervous system goes awry.

What are Causes of Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a long-term condition that causes pale, white patches to develop on the skin - in severe cases these cover the whole body. Vitiligo affects one in every hundred people and can strike anyone at any time, often leading to depression and isolation - especially amongst children. We need your help in finding a cure for this debilitating and distressing disease and to support the millions of vitiligo sufferers across the globe.

Although multiple hypotheses have been suggested as potential triggers that cause vitiligo, studies strongly imply that changes in the immune system are responsible for the condition. Vitiligo has been proposed to be a multifactorial disease with genetic susceptibility and environmental factors both thought to play a role. The TYR gene encodes the protein tyrosinase, which is not a component of the immune system, but is an enzyme of the melanocyte that catalyzes melanin biosynthesis, and a major autoantigen in generalized vitiligo.

Causes of Vitiligo

Immune
Variations in genes that are part of the immune system or part of melanocytes have both been associated with vitiligo. It is also thought to be caused by the immune system attacking and destroying the melanocytes of the skin. A genomewide association study found approximately 36 independent susceptibility loci for generalized vitiligo.
Autoimmune associations
Vitiligo is sometimes associated with autoimmune and inflammatory diseases such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes mellitus, psoriasis, Addison's disease, pernicious anemia, alopecia areata, and systemic lupus erythematosus.
Among the inflammatory products of NALP1 are caspase 1 and caspase 7, which activate the inflammatory cytokine interleukin-1β. Interleukin-1β is expressed at high levels in patients with vitiligo. In one of the mutations, the amino acid leucine in the NALP1 protein was replaced by histidine (Leu155->His). The original protein and sequence is highly conserved in evolution, and is found in humans, chimpanzee, rhesus monkey, and the bush baby. Addison's disease (typically an autoimmune destruction of the adrenal glands) may also be seen in individuals with vitiligo.
